EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

he highlight of my week was the Fanfare Celebration event held in the Mashina Lounge at the Christchurch Casino recently. Christchurch history was made as guests watched the live feed of Neil Dawson's Fanfare being switched on for the ﬁrst time. This permanent landmark – six-storey's high with 360, 1.5m pinwheel fans is New Zealand's largest public sculpture and sits beside the Northern Motorway to welcome people into our renewing city. Fanfare struck a particular chord with me this week as I had just returned from Melbourne where their public art is outstanding. Think of their giant Ferris wheel lit and looking spectacular in the city scape. The ﬂame towers running the length of the Crown Casino promenade, and on a smaller scale the quirky statues and art that is scattered around the CBD and in the laid-back laneways. I hadn't put a lot of thought into public art until recently, and so when I had the chance to ask Deborah McCormick, Director of Scape Public Art Trust about what public art means to her and how it is evolving in Christchurch it was a fascinating insight into how these subtle (and not so subtle) introductions change the vibe of a city and create its identity (pages 8, 9). Creative writing is also a wonderful art and Flash Fiction is a fascinating and thought-provoking form. The shortest story ever written is just six words long and attributed to Ernest Hemingway. Read that story and others in fewer than 55 words (pages 14, 15) and you may be lured into joining in on Flash Fiction Day on 22 June. Continuing the arty theme this issue we have Showbiz back in full swing, expression through fashion, and inspiration for a black and white home interior theme. Unleash your creative side this winter and enjoy a wonderful adventure of the mind.

KIWI TEAM IN NEPAL Christchurch's Sam Johnson has helped organise the construction of 70 transitional shelters in outlying areas of Nepal that have had no assistance since the devastating April earthquakes. Johnson, who founded and led the Student Volunteer Army after the Christchurch earthquakes, has joined forces with the RiseNepal organisation to build temporary homes in the village of Chaimale, about three hours from Kathmandu. His mission has the support of Air New Zealand and other benefactors. “We have an ambitious goal of putting up 1000 shelters or homes. We had a group of 10 young Nepali volunteers help our New Zealand team collect and organise rooﬁng iron, framing and wire. Johnson's team is also helping the Friends of Himalayan Children Inc. lead by Nepali Som Tamang who is focusing on the hardest hit areas of mountain villages where most homes and schools collapsed in the earthquake.

rt, and in particular public art, is a life motivator for Deborah McCormick. Director of SCAPE Public Art Trust and its Christchurch Biennials, Deborah gets a buzz out of assisting in making free public art challenge our senses, every day, in and around the city. Her vision is for Cantab’s to be excited, engaged and stimulated by contemporary art. Take for example the recently installed Fanfare – a bold, contemporary, large-scale sculpture that is 20 metres in diameter with 360 onemetre wide, wind-powered pinwheels that welcome people into the city elegantly by day and spectacularly when lit at night. Public Art gets us talking, challenges our imaginations and puts soul and character into our city. I caught up with Deborah to discover more about her love of art…

McCormick You have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UC; what inspired you to study the arts? Creativity, in many shapes, has always inspired me and has been integral to my life. From a very young age I was involved with drawing, collage, sewing, crafts, music and theatre. But it was my art teacher, Nancy Bracey (at Christchurch Girls’ High School) who encouraged me to apply to the School of Fine Arts at The University of Canterbury. Her husband, Ted Bracey, was head of the school at the time.

What is your personal creative forte? My Fine Arts Major is Photography. My early work included development of large scale photographic installations exploring gender politics and identity. Do you continue with this endeavour personally or commercially? While I don’t currently make much of my own work, I have been known to make the odd work for friends and family, for special occasions, from my overseas travels.

What led you into making public art, and art and industry consulting a career? My mum said to me one day, as graduation drew near, “So dear, what are you going to do with this expensive degree?” There weren’t many openings for young arts graduates in Christchurch back in 1998! So I took a proposal for a one-off exhibition called ‘Art and Industry’ to the Council’s arts adviser Warren Pringle. Together we set up a Trust and co-directed the first Biennial series of works in 2000. 17 years, 160 temporary and 9 permanent works later, I’m still working in the same field. I am very fortunate to have worked with some of the greatest current artists in New Zealand and internationally. I thrive on working with artists from their concept ideas to then bringing specialists together to make their artistic vision and concept a reality. You are influential in the installation of both temporary and permanent public art. Which top three are the most thought-provoking temporary installations? Amongst those would be; Ziggurat (2000) by Pauline Rhodes, See Change (2008) by James Oram and Ahakoa he iti (2004) by Keri Whatiri & Rachael Rakena. Ziggurat was a large pyramid structure that was formed out of gabions and river stones at 10 metres square rising to 5 metres in height placed in Hagley Park. See Change saw a single-person sailing dinghy suspended from a rotating tower crane over Cranmer Square. This was making comment on two important symbols of the transformation in Christchurch’s urban development: the boats and ships from the past and the cranes from the present. Ahakoa he iti was produced as part of Lightscape and was a projection and sound based work onto a rock in front of Christchurch Cathedral.

And permanent? For me, Fanfare by Neil Dawson recently completed at Chaney’s Corner, Tree Houses for Swamp Dwellers on the corner of Colombo and Gloucester Street and Solidarity Grid by Mischa Kuball in Park Terrace. As a city we have been fortunate to have been gifted several permanent installations, which have captured the public’s imagination most? I think Fanfare; this is due to the sheer scale and beauty of the piece. Not only that, Fanfare has a story of journeying back to Christchurch from Sydney. There are also the fascinating engineering aspects with its 360 degree fans that rotate in the wind and breaking system (that slows the spinning fans in high winds). Moreover it signals a welcome, lighting the way from Canterbury to the city. As a city how do you think we are doing with our public art presentations? Following the earthquakes Christchurch has had a proliferation of public and street art activity. When many of the galleries were damaged or closed the arts community and

artists took to the streets. For me this is exhilarating and I strongly believe that Christchurch can and will, build on the great work done through the transitional period. We can become a destination known the world over for its impressive and eclectic public and street art collection. What do you enjoy most about the art industry? Being an enabler. I love working at the interface of artists and industry, problem solving and delivering great art. My passion drives me to think big, push boundaries, seek out teams of experts and the very best artists in New Zealand and internationally. On a more personal note; what is your favourite item of clothing? A red wool Kate Sylvester coat with brass buttons. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I enjoy equestrian, dressage, show jumping, cross country and I’m keen to get an all-terrain motorbike

200 years on 200 years ago, on Sunday 18 June 1815, the Duke of Wellington's Anglo-allied soldiers fought against Napoleon's French army in the Battle of Waterloo. The short but furious struggle marked the end of 20 years of conﬂict and began an era of peace which lasted nearly half a century. Over 190,000 visitors will make the trip to Waterloo in the next couple of months, with over 50% of those attending or appearing in the battle re-enactments marking the anniversary. This is almost the exact same amount of visitors as the 174,000 soldiers who fought in the battle 200 years ago.

Fanfare DIARY THIS A new permanent landmark can be seen standing tall over the Canterbury Plains. Neil Dawson's Fanfare, New Zealand's largest public sculpture, has been oﬃcially presented and illuminated. This visionary six-storey-high sphere is covered in 1.5 metre steel pinwheel fans and can be illuminated in a spectrum of colours at night.

WHEN LESS IS MORE The shortest day of the year, Monday, June 22, appears to be the perfect choice to celebrate National Flash Fiction Day (NFFD) with samples of small but perfectly formed short short-stories.

his free literary event, to be held in Christchurch from 6-8pm at The Twisted Hop, 616 Ferry Road, Woolston, will occur at the same time as the Auckland and Wellington award events. Morrin Rout, well known literary presenter, will compere the evening. Open to the general public and for readers and writers alike, the highlights of the event will include readings from Christchurch writers, the announcement of the National Flash Fiction Award competition and the South Island Writers' Association Flash Fiction Day competition.

Celebrated writer Owen Marshall, a judge of this year's NFFD competition, will announce the winners, as well as read from his own work. Co-organiser of the event, Frankie McMillan, explains that ﬂash ﬁction stories typically range from 300 to 500 words, although what has been described as a six-word story is attributed to Ernest Hemingway. It simply reads: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." "Most short short-stories follow the traditional structure, with a beginning, middle and end, and usually focus on a character. They're short on words but

As part of the wide range of styles to be played at its Music Festival, Alliance Française de Christchurch will be bringing a musician from New Caledonia to perform at the Wunderbar, in Lyttelton, on Sunday, 21 June.

oagan is a singer and songwriter whose music is inspired by the traditional Kanak rhythm from New Caledonia. “My music creates bridges, brings together and confronts,” says the young artist, whose style is unique, merging contemporary and traditional sounds, oﬀering reggae, rock and soul, in which the rhythm is created by bamboo sticks.

The fast-rising star was awarded the Export Prize at the 2014 New Caledonia Music Awards. This enabled him to tour the world this year, showcasing New Caledonian music. Also performing at the Wunderbar will be talented local artists, including Side Swipe, Sabroso, Sans Tribe and The Brooms, with music ranging from jazz to acoustic folk harmony, eclectic country blues and popular music.

The Alliance Française de Christchurch is a registered charity committed to advancing cultural and social ties between New Zealand, France and the French-speaking world. World-class company in full swing After an extended hiatus due to earthquake interruption, Showbiz Christchurch is back in full swing to provide us with much-needed, world-class fully staged musicals at the Isaac Theatre Royal.

he not-for-profit production company has been presenting outstanding musical theatre since 1938, when it began as the Christchurch Operatic Society Inc, but was put out of action by the second major earthquake in February 2011. Showbiz Christchurch came back into full production in April of this year with a sell-out season of Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Phantom of the Opera. To further get Christchurch's foremost producer of musical theatre going again, in May it appointed as general manager Michael Bayly, who has extensive experience in both business and the performing arts. Michael brings a broad and nuanced background to the position and, under his guidance, Showbiz is now preparing for its second post-earthquake production, Monty Python's Spamalot, which starts at the Isaac Theatre Royal on September 4 – exactly five years after the first earthquake. Showbiz's last season at the Isaac

Theatre Royal before it was closed by the February 2011 quake was Sweeney Todd, which was staged during October 2010. In the following February, they were already preparing their next production, which was to be Spamalot. By the time of the second quake, the cast were underway, in full rehearsal for Spamalot, which was scheduled to begin on April 1. During the quake itself, Showbiz's wardrobe department was working at its Balfour Terrace premises, sewing the armour suits for the Knights of Ni, a bunch of spoof characters in this musical comedy set in the times of the legendary King Arthur. The power went out, the sewing machines stopped and the staﬀ had to leave the building. They were not permitted back in for three months but, on their return, switched on the machines and completed the armour. A huge Excalibur sword, which was also at the Balfour Terrace building, was bent out of shape when a wall collapsed on it.

Excalibur is now being reshaped. Based on the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot follows the exploits of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table in pursuit of the Holy Grail through a variety of ludicrously loopy settings, accompanied by a bevy of beautiful girls, not to mention ﬂying cows, a killer rabbit and even some rude French people. Showbiz has reopened in new premises at 369 St Asaph Street, which include its oﬃces, rehearsal studios and other facilities for the preparation of its big productions.

And after the huge success of The Phantom of the Opera, Michael is already conﬁdent that Spamalot will also prove to be a big hit. “Over 24,000 people came to see The Phantom and every reviewer said this version was better than any other they had seen previously. background in design and a love for jewellery led Michaela to her position at Harrington's, where her work involves everything from assisting customers to working with their network of local craftspeople and training new staff. “I've been making my own jewellery since I was a little kid,” says Michaela, who describes herself as obsessed with jewellery as a child. From simple beads on a string she moved onto completing a Degree in Design at CPIT, which included a range of visual arts and silversmith skills. Her knowledge of the structural aspect to designing a piece of jewellery is invaluable when working with customers, many of whom have a specific design in mind. Taking their design idea as a starting point, Michaela and the other experienced staff at Harrington's work with each customer to discuss design options, with an extensive catalogue of work to draw from. “The look on people's faces, when they are so thrilled with the resulting piece, is the highlight of my work,” says Michaela. Often this is remodelling of a sentimental piece gifted down the generations, with the original stones

ART SCENE A Canterbury iconic Art Exhibition celebrates its 10th year birthday over the weekend of 10 to 12 July. The Kaiapoi Art Expo is one of the largest in the Canterbury region with over 500 works on show over the two-day event. The expo will feature three guest artists – Raymond Herber, Andrew Carran and Philip Trusttum and over 100 local artists from around the Waimakariri. Arts in Oxford is an Art Centre with a vision for ensuring people of all ages and backgrounds can create, learn, demonstrate and display visual art. Arts in Oxford has a dedicated workshop offering opportunities for people to engage in workshops and classes, a fine art gift shop and the purpose built gallery which currently is showcasing the Essence of a Landscape exhibition by Micheline Robinson. Micheline Robinson is a French Canadian painter now based on the Kapiti coast and Arts in Oxford is the location for her first solo exhibition in New Zealand.

oining the panel of expert judges this year is top NZ chef, food columnist and author Martin Bosley. Bosley says as the most egalitarian of dishes, it is unsurprising Kiwis have an enduring love affair with the humble pie. “For a brief moment in time, it doesn't matter who you are or what you do, nothing else matters when you have a decent pie. “Whether it's a crisp pastry base soaked with sauce or gravy, with a burnished, golden pastry top, or, an open one with a creamy filling over a soft under crust. A pie can be a classic or something with a modern twist, something new yet familiar with a filling that both delights and surprises.”

Pie makers around the country are rolling up their sleeves as they prepare to compete in the 19th annual Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards.

With entries being judged across 12 categories, and 49 awards to be won, Bakels managing director and judge Brent Kersel says the level of competition heightens every year. “In past years we've had entries of pork and puha, pork and watercress, a myriad of sweet pies and last year we had the impressive lamb cutlet pie take away the Supreme Award. It's always interesting to see what the competition turns up as our bakers continue to push the boundaries.” Winners of the 2015 Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Award will be announced on Tuesday 21 July.

It also means applying ﬁne-dining standards to everyday food. Alesha’s incredible knowledge of the ingredients available can be seen in the variety of the ever-changing range of salads available at the deli.

On a recent visit, the four salads of the day consisted of: · Miso roasted eggplant, avocado, coriander, activated buckwheat, chilli and nigella seeds · Organic beetroot, kale, dill oil, roasted apple and nutritional yeast · Organic mixed rice, peas, cashews, roast-garlic omelette, lemon zest and Vietnamese mint, and · Organic roasted carrots, dried tomatoes, fenugreek yoghurt, currants and pickled walnuts. Alesha carefully layers the ingredients so that each individual flavour is identifiable and each component works in harmony with the others. I took home the eggplantavocado salad and was amazed just how distinct all the flavours were. There’s also a range of other offerings at both BearLion Foods and the farmers’ market, featuring a wide range of

ingredients, some of which you may never have heard of. “I’m always learning about different ingredients, some inspired by childhood memories like putting nutritional yeast on toast, which is high in Vitamin B12. This is why our food and ﬂavours change all the time,” says Alesha. “I was a privileged child, growing up in the Marlborough Sounds. My mother was a fantastic cook and my father was a keen hunter who taught me about the wonders of the outdoors. I always wanted to use what Mother Earth provides.”

Alesha started at the CPIT for a cooking certificate at the age of 16. Her first job in Christchurch was at the Honeypot Café in Lichfield Street, where she learned how a kitchen was run. Then, it was on to Australia, including the Catalina fine-dining waterfront restaurant at Rose Bay, Sydney. The most inspirational influences were in London, working for Ramsay Holding’s Maze Restaurant and then moving onto working at one of the Ottolenghi delicatessens. Founded by renowned Israeli/British chefs and restaurant-owners Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi, this turned out to be the deli of her dreams. Alesha acknowledges that the time spent there shaped her career. Also specialising in salads, the chefs working for Ottolenghi were constantly encouraged to

I saw the extreme need for real food, especially at the takeaway level.” says Alesha. “There is also need for focus on education in food choices, including good fats, natural sweetness, organics, raw and living foods, without the use of refined white sugar or flour.” BearLion Foods caters to people with food allergies. nter Café Carmen, which Alyssa opened with a business partner in February. The bright, cheery cafe is in a brand new building on the corner of Carmen and Waterloo Roads – hence the name. At Café Carmen Alyssa is in her element, cooking up a storm and serving excellent Hummingbird coﬀee. Take outs are available, but dining-in is the focus of this classy cafe. “My vision was to open a place where local business people can dine in,” Alyssa says. It's all about tasty, quality food. Hillyers gourmet pies and goodies are bought in, but everything else is prepared on site, all

with a touch of originality provided by this passionate foodie. Eggs benedict is served with spinach and pesto. Filled rolls are enhanced with a colourful crispy salad slaw of red cabbage, yellow capsicum, seeded mustard, red onion and pumpkin seeds. As a chef it's a luxury to be able to go to a friend's barbeque, as weekends are generally when we are at our busiest and I'm working. So when we were invited to a friends' place recently I couldn't turn it down. While there was no doubt the quality of the meat would be discussed, especially as these were farming friends, another question did come up, “Do you think it is ready?” A piece of advice I received quite early on in my career from a family friend was “If you want a good steak, the first thing you need is a good butcher.” Which is why, here at The Villas, we use Peter Timbs for all of our meat supplies - their meat is always of a high standard. When shopping for meat you want a good amount of fat/marbling to keep the meat moist, it also gives a better flavour to your steak. When you are cooking the perfect steak, how do you gauge when it's ready? You can spend money on a digital probe which is fine for larger cuts, but I prefer the “prod test” that's where you poke the steak, and then with the tip of your index finger lightly touching the tip of your thumb on your left hand, poke the meaty part at the base of the thumb with your right index finger. If they feel the same you have rare, move your thumb to the next finger and you have medium rare, and so on. However, this can take practice. Until you get it right, we have teamed up with the guys at First Light, home of 100% grass fed Wagyu to offer some of their best strip loin with a 7-9 marble count, cooked the way you like it for a limited time. CAULIFLOWER MASH My kids would never eat cauliflower, but they do eat cauliflower mash…. Because they think it is mashed potato! My thirteen-year-old son says 'thanks mum for making me mash potato' which just makes me giggle! This mash is beautiful and it goes so well with pork chops or any main meal. INGREDIENTS 1/2 head cauliflower 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt & pepper to taste METHOD The trick to making a good cauliflower mash is to steam the cauliflower so that it is not too watery. Bring to the boil a large saucepan of water, (the saucepan needs to fit a steamer). Cut the cauliflower into pieces and include the stalks, place in the steamer and put the lid on. Steam for 20 minutes or until the cauliflower is tender. Once cooked place the cauliflower into the food processor, along with the olive oil, salt and pepper. Blitz until very smooth. You can mash it by hand but it is very hard to get a smooth consistency. Serve the mash with fresh herbs.

From 13 June – 8 July the gallery is featuring an exhibition called “Contempo” – works by Brent Forbes and Monique Lacey. Brent's paintings are based on a holiday he had at Birdlings Flat. They are moodily evocative of that place at the edge of the sea, hemmed in by hills and with its BY MONIQUE LACEY eclectic collections of dwellings. Monique's works are inspired by surface and texture and the paintings are built up using numerous layers of paint, some of which are subsequently removed to reveal parts of previous layers. She uses a variety of mediums, both oil and acrylic, and manipulates the paint with diﬀerent tools and brushes. The Lexus RC F takes over from the IS F as the performance ﬂagship in the Lexus line up (not counting the limited LF A, that is) and as such packs a revised version of the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 that featured in the IS, but in an all-new two door coupe body that takes the Japanese manufacturer’s new styling language to its most aggressive extreme so far. We spend a week with one to see if we fall in love with it.

OUTSIDE Likes: Incredibly aggressive and elegant at the same time. New Lexus styling works brilliantly well here.

Dislikes: The way the nose drops oﬀ does make it hard to park – you really have no idea where the nose is and have to hope that the parking sensors pick up everything…

CARS OF THE WORLD Coventry Transport Museum, UK, has named the Ferrari F40, Porsche 911 Turbo, original Range Rover and Jaguar C-type as the ﬁrst entries in a special Trailblazing Cars of the World display, as part of the museum's re-launch celebrations beginning this weekend.

he Ferrari F40 was the fastest and most expensive Ferrari of its time and was the first road-legal production car to break the 200mph (321.869km) barrier, while the Porsche 911 has been in production since 1963, making it one of the 'Cars of the 20th Century' and one of only two cars in history to have remained in continuous production for more than 50 years. The Turbo derivative of the 911 was the first commercially successful turbo performance car, becoming an instant automotive icon and led to the universal acceptance of the turbo as a way of boosting performance. Jaguar's Coventry-built C-type, in production from 1951 to 1953, pioneered the use of disc brakes, first used in the 1952 Le Mans 24-hour race, which the car won. Disc brakes went on to replace the traditional drum brakes on almost all new cars produced, saving countless lives and winning races all over the world with the same basic concept as pioneered on the C-type

ar names. It is a tricky art getting it just right. Coming up with a name that invokes the spirit of the car is a very hard thing to do – the Ford Probe, for example, failed quite badly at that when, instead of invoking images of a cutting-edge machine used for space exploration, it simply conjured up the idea of curious aliens. However, occasionally they do get them right. Ford triumphed with “Mustang”, while sister company Mercury created one of the best car names ever with the Mercury Marauder. Dodge Charger works, as does Viper, Challenger and Magnum. The Aussies never seemed quite as good as the Americans at coming up with good car names but HSV have a bit of a knack for it, and one of their cars has the most perfectly imposing name possible. It is the HSV Senator. And we were lucky enough to get our sweaty hands on one for a week…

Outside Big, imposing and far more digniﬁed than anything else wearing the HSV badge (or even the Holden badge for that matter) the Senator looks like its name sounds.

Inside Magniﬁcent electrically adjustable and heated leather seats are supremely comfortable and supportive.

Under the bonnet The 340kW/570Nm 6.2-litre LS3 V8 is a simply staggering engine. Huge power everywhere, yet remarkably tractable and usable at low revs/speeds. Six-speed auto transmission is capable of handling all the torque and power, yet still

manages to be quick and smooth in normal driving conditions. The noise that comes from every part of the powertrain is simply remarkable – at idle it is a big, threatening rumble, while at full throttle it is a bellowing, indignant roar. Awesome…
